“Don't walk in front of me; I may not follow. Don't walk behind me; I may not lead. Just walk beside me and be my friend.” By Albert Camus
Yesterday, in an alumni function, I met few old friends - Engineering College classmates from VNIT, Nagpur, India - after a gap of 27 years. One by one we hugged each others, and the gap dissolved in no time - like a piece of butter on a frying pan.
What happened next was a delightful experience of cleansing, unchaining and liberating my 'heart and soul' from decades old captivity -- 'Pains and Sorrows' of missing true friends.
Remember, we don't make friends every now and then, and more we grow less we can.
The re-kindled feelings, even after after a gap of close to 3 decades: testimony of the depth of human relationship and a never dying emotional attachment, we develop with some at an early age, when nothing, but selfless self dominates over all selfish interests.
But there is a Grey side of old relationship; when the comparison of materialistic success - during these years of detachment - overshadows the joy of re-union, we become self-imposed 'Children of a lesser God.' Thank GOD, it didn't happen with us!
"In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit," said Albert Schweitzer, and I thank all my friends - none of them 'just another human being,' but the angels with dancing wings - who rekindled my inner spirit.
"The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares." By Henri Nouwen.
